“The Rocky Horror Show,” the stage version of the 1975 movie that became a Halloween cult classic, will come to life in the Empire Theater at the New York State Fairgrounds this weekend.
This outlandish, musical spoof of science fiction and horror movies returned to the stage last weekend Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20; and will perform again on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27, just in time for Halloween. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a special midnight showing on Saturday; a reflection of the midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” that kept the movie alive for decades after its initial run in theaters.
“We have a wonderful cast of seasoned actors accompanied by a live rock band,” said Christine Lightcap of the Talent Co., the show’s executive producer and director. “Last weekend’s audiences had a ball; they threw rice at the wedding scene and the majority of the audience did ‘The Time Warp’ along with the cast.”
True fans of the Halloween season can enjoy “The Rocky Horror Show,” then experience horrors of another kind at Fright Nights at the Fair during their final weekend of the season. Fright Nights at the Fair, the region’s largest haunted attraction, runs from 7 p.m. to midnight this Friday and Saturday and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday in the Beef Cattle Barn, located on the other side of the Fairgrounds.
This is the sixth time The Talent Co. has produced “The Rocky Horror Show,” and the second time it has appeared at the Empire Theater. The show is a rock opera about a clean-cut couple who find themselves stranded in a castle with mad scientist Dr. Frank N. Furter and a horde of singing and dancing aliens from planet Transylvania.
The original show developed a cult following of fans that wore costumes depicting their favorite characters, shouted responses to dialogue and threw items like toast and toilet paper at certain points in the production. Similar audience participation will be allowed at the Empire Theater, Lightcap said. Cocktail tables have been removed from the seating arrangement to give fans room to dance “The Time Warp.”
Tickets to Rocky Horror are $25. Admission is $23 for senior citizens and $20 for students. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Talent Co. at 315-479-SHOW.
