Parade and Expo Mark Veterans Day, While Ski Show Marks Start of Winter
The New York State Department of Agriculture today announced the following events running from Friday, November 8 to Sunday, November 10 at the New York State Fairgrounds:
The Central New York Veterans Parade and Expo will honor the courage of and sacrifices made by America’s veterans Saturday at the Fairgrounds. The annual parade steps off at noon, but the event begins at 10 a.m. in the Center of Progress Building with a military-themed exposition. At the expo, Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division’s display will feature some of its troops, equipment, and information about a career in the Army. Other organizations participating include the Tri-Care health care program for service members, the New York State Museum, the Syracuse Veterans Administration hospital, along with other local military support groups.
A collection of Revolutionary War memorabilia will have as its centerpiece the George Washington Inaugural Bible, the Bible upon which America’s first President swore his oath. The Bible has since been used for the inaugurations of Presidents Warren Harding, Dwight Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush.
New to the event this year is a job fair for veterans, and an area for children that will feature activities, games, displays, and face painting.
The parade and expo are free, with the expo running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information is available on the event’s website, cnyveteransparade.org.
The Horticulture Building will host the annual Syracuse Ski Swap and New Ski Sale, Friday from 5 – 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday from Noon – 5 p.m. Admission is free. What organizers say is the largest ski and snowboard sale in the state will feature a huge selection of ski and snowboard equipment at prices up to 70% off list. More than 30 sponsors will offer more than 4,000 pieces of equipment for sale.
People can trade their used equipment at the show for credits towards purchases at the show. There are restrictions, and people should visit the event’s website for details, at upstateskiandboard.com.
